I'm looking for art projects I can do with kids 5years old - 18 years old (three different age groups - projects don't have to be acceptable for all of the ages) that can utilize mat board scraps (all shapes, sizes, colors are available).

I work at an art center that has a frame shop and we have about 8 boxes of mat board scraps. Mat board can't be recycled, so I'm trying to find a way to use it during our summer art classes.

Why do you love art so much? Ever since I was drawing, and by drawing I mean scribbling, on my bedroom wall with crayons I loved art. Why do I love it? I have no idea! I guess it's a great outlet for a creative soul. I like how art allows you to express yourself, no matter what medium. I love the feeling I get when I have a creative idea and I can't wait to put it on the paper or the canvas.

What kind of art do you do? I tend to doodle or draw. I love to paint. I'm not good at it, but I still love it and if people have no clue what they're looking at, I just tell them that it's abstract! I usually paint with acrylic. I've attempted sketching...

Are you or have you ever been an art student? Only in high school. I have been contemplating going to community classes to learn more.

What are you doing with your life, career wise? Working part time in retail. Not really where I want to be but it is a job. Eventually, I would like to open up my own design business.

What was the best art class you've ever taken? In Grade 11 I took two art classes. In the one, it was more hands on where we were told to come up with some random idea and go with it. In the other it was focused on art history.

What was the best art assignment you've ever had? In my Grade 12 art class we had to pick a theme and create 5 pieces to go with that theme. I chose "juxtaposition" and tried to use different mediums for each. I glued pennies on one piece, I cut a hole in a book and put a tiny tea pot inside (called it "Novel-Tea"), I did one painting where instead of a bowl of fruit it was a thimble of fruit (the thimble was aluminum foil), and another piece I created was with clay (an igloo on a tropical island). The reason it was the best assignment was because I had so much creative freedom. The mark didn't matter.

What is your art inspiration? Nature and landscape, poems or song lyrics, other art that I see (makes me want to try something similar), my own crazy imagination

Who/what are some of your favorite famous artists/works of art? I like M.C. Escher, Henri Magritte, Vincent Van Gogh, Leonardo Da Vinci

Some of my work:

4 panel painting I did The middle painting is my thimble of fruit One of my favourites because I was starting to understand light and shadow

Why do you love art so much? I am trying to fall in love with it again.  I hit my peak in high school and was very well known around the school as one of the best artists.  Fellow students gave me five yearbooks at a time, because they wanted me to draw something for them, so when I was 'famous' they would have a piece of me.  Silly, but after high school, I felt that I didn't want to turn my art into a job.  Anyway, I love art because its a skill not many people possess but can learn and practice.  Its also very therapeutic and is an outlet for emotions.

What kind of art do you do? I like sketching still life or people, animals and structures.  I don't really feel connected to the abstract world, but the pieces I have done that are not my norm, I actually cherish for the unbridled creativity.

Are you or have you ever been an art student? Other than grade school and high school, I only took a few art classes in college and then dropped my interest in learning more.

What are you doing with your life, career wise? I have a front desk job at a spa, but other than that, I'm planning on going back to school for business and property management.  I have an ETSY store where I sell items I've made with my sewing machine.  You can visit my store here.

What was the best art class you've ever taken? My teacher in high school, who I had for two non-consecutive years, made art something serious for me.  He criticized everyone and I think none of us had been talked to like that before.  He would walk around and pick up your work and go, "that's absolute crap.  start over" and that made me realize that there is so much more to art than slapping shit on something with no rhyme or reason.  I hated him, but he made a huge impact.

What was the best art assignment you've ever had? I can't recall, there have been a few good ones, but anything involving charcoal or sketching were my faves.  Actually, I really liked the ones where once you put your pen down, you can't pick up your hand until its done, and your eyes must be closed.  Lots of great things came from that exercise.

What is your art inspiration? Culture, animals, shapes, shadows, structures, urban life, food, humor etc.

Who/what are some of your favorite famous artists/works of art? I had a huge art crush on Van Gogh in high school.  I've since then discovered Dali, Magritte, and friends of mine.  I don't have a particular artist or piece of work that sticks out.

Some of my work:
This is a chalk drawing of a white van. 2001Guache abstract on paper board 2001Mazda sports car with graphite on charcoal paper 2003Nude in charcoal on newsprint 2004my left hand in several positions in charcoal 2004

Name: Michaela
Age: 15 (high school student)
Sex: female
Location: Pensacola, Florida

Why do you love art so much?
I love it because it's something I can express myself with, since I'm not very good with words. Art gives me the ability to let all my emotions out and it helps me a lot with all my anger problems (which are often quite a problem) but to me, my sketchbook is techincally a diary to me. I never let anyone see inside, and it's always with me, no matter where I end up going.

What kind of art do you do?
I like to change periodically, but I always end up back to drawing more then anything. I like trying different styles and so far my most favorite is photography, for some odd reason. I sketch a lot though, and I draw way too much for my own good, although, technically they are only doodles.

Are you or have you ever been an art student?
I've only ever taken one art class, in my 8th grade year of middle school (besides mandatory art classes in elementary). I'm kind of just going with the flow, and teaching myself what I wish to know.

What are you doing with your life, career wise?
I want to be an artist with all my heart. Always have always will. I am, however, going through the Criminal Justice field with the help of a program at my school, which has also become a passion of mine. Iw ant to continue as an artist, but I love the way the mind (in various types of people) works. And that may be where my path takes me, im just no entirely sure where I wish to go right now.

What was the best art class you've ever taken?
Middle school art class. The teacher was the most amazing teacher ever and i've never had so much fun in a class before that one. I miss it.

What was the best art assignment you've ever had?
It wasn't for an art class, but it was for a geometry project that I had to do. I did it on the Eiffle Tower. It took forever to draw out a smaller scale of the Tower but I loved doing it, it was simply the funnest thing ever.

What is your art inspiration?
My friends. Most definately. And just people in general, because everyone has their own meaning within them, and they are the inspiration that I seek out.

Who/what are some of your favorite famous artists/works of art? (pictures/links welcome!)
"Holy Trinty" by Masaccio
"Holy Trinity" by Masaccio
(It's just my all time favorite. When I first saw it I litterally fell in love with it. I'm not all that religious, but I just love this painting with all my heart. One of the best pieces during the Renaissance period.)

Why do you love art so much?
well, i guess because of self-expression and creativity... I just like to draw, i can't really say why..

What kind of art do you do?
- painting, drawing. Oh, and also i used to take a wood painting class but then i had to move to America  and leave it... I have a history of having to move and leave everything behind :(  But i still paint on wood ocassionaly in the traditional northern russian style.

Are you or have you ever been an art student?
- well, officially ever since i was 7 years old i have been taking all kinds of art classes in every place i lived, but i have been learning from my grandmother ever since i was able to hold a pencil (if that kind of "student" counts). But seriously, my grandmother is really good. she also writes poetry, which i'm totally unable to do.

What are you doing with your life, career wise?
I don't have a career yet, but i am tearing apart between chemistry (what my parents want) and art careers.

What was the best art class you've ever taken?
2003 - 2004. i was only 8-9 years old, but it was seriously a really good art class. 6 days a week, 1.5 hrs a day. It was basically an art school. This was back in Russia, i had regular school in the afternoon and art school in the morning. It was a wonderful art school, they had an performing art dept, a music dept, and others. I was on the visual arts dept. We had a drawing class, a sculpting class, a painting class, a composition (arranging the future drawing on the paper so it looks good, putting the accent and such) class, and an art history class. Then i had to move to Moscow, and leave art school. Now my peers are so far ahead of me. I'm still seriously upset about it, i never wanted to leave anyway.

What was the best art assignment you've ever had?
i really don't know... There were many. The art class when we actually had organized assignments was the art school i mentioned above, and this was like 5 yrs, ago, it's hard to remeber. I liked the fantasy plant black and white assignment. I still have many painting leflt from back then. My grandmother and aunt seriously need to take them off the walls, they're way too old and not even that good.

What is your art inspiration?
nature, trees, simple objects, friut, sometimes emotions. Sometimes, books.

Who/what are some of your favorite famous artists/works of art? (pictures/links welcome!)
- I don't really know

Show off some of your favorite pieces you've created:
They're not that good... and i used to have an obsession with still life. some of the painting are like from 2 years ago.

Hey guys don't forget to keep posting assignments for us! It can be anything, something you've had in the past, something your doing right now, or something you totally made up! Also if you have any suggestions for the community, I'd love to hear them! I'm not really experienced in running communities, so feedback would be great!! Anyway, here is another assignment I had in my Drawing II class last year:

Assignment
Cultural Influences

Give us a description of the project:
Take three cultures (for example, Japanese, Spanish and Indian) and make a piece of art that has noticeable "pieces" from each country.

These "pieces" can be materials, styles of art or concepts.

(I hope this is an OK assignment. I'll be doing it in music~)
